Irvine, Magnus, Bradle G.W., L.T., B.J. The restocking of fishers in lake states forests. 1964 Transaction of the North American Wildlife Natural Resource Conference 29:307-315

This 1964 paper goes over the restoration of fisher into Wisconsin and other lake states, and their value as a furbearing species and a predator of the porcupine.

"The fisher is believed to have ranged over most of the forested areas of Wisconsin and Michigan. By the late 1920’s it had become very rare or non-existent in both states." p. 307

"Logging and burning of the forests of Michigan and Wisconsin undoubtedly had adverse effect upon the fisher. Values of up to $150 for a fisher pelt during the first three decades of this century made it profitable for the trapper and hunter to pursue a fisher until caught. It is an exceptionally vulnerable animal to trapping and hunting. The combination of these factors contributed to their final extirpation…The recovery of the habitat, statutory protection, and a drastic decline in the value of fisher pelts have been important factors in the resurgence of the fisher in those areas" p. 308

[Also on p. 308 is an account of the first known attempt to reintroduce fishers, which happened in Nova Scotia in 1940. In addition there are sections of information of "Live-trapping Techniques", "Holding and Shipping", and "Handling and Release Procedures."]

"The fisher is protected by law in both Wisconsin and Michigan. However, they are vulnerable to traps which are baited or scented to take such species as coyote, bobcat, and fox." p.311
