| Craighead, Greer, Knight, Pac | J.J., K.R., R.R., H.I. | Grizzly bear mortality in the Yellowstone ecosystem, 1959-1987. | 1988 | Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Helena, Montana, 57 pp. |
This is a sobering but very informative compilation of all recorded grizzly bear mortalities in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from 1959 to 1987. A "dead bear" map is included as an appendix, and clusters are evident surrounding each of the resort developments in Yellowstone Park (e.g., Fishing Bridge, Grant Village, Canyon, Old Faithful, etc.); the gateway communities (West Yellowstone, Cooke City, Gardiner), and other mortalities are scattered across the adjacent national forests due to conflicts with livestock, forest users on Forest Service roads, and backcountry hunters.
Note More recent records of grizzly bear mortalities in the GYE are maintained by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team in Bozeman, Montana (see record, "IGBST 2000").
