Harding, Nagy Lee, John A. Response of grizzly bears to hydrocarbon exploration on Richards Island, northwest territories, Canada.  1980 International Conference on Bear Research and Management 4: 277-280

This paper discusses results of previous studies done in the Mckenzie Delta Region, in particular Richards Island. It focuses on bear observations and den site locations in relation to existing gas exploration facilities and presents new observations in grizzly responses to hydrcarbon exploration collected by the senior author. Observations were taken opportunistically during the course of other studies and covered the study area, but concentrated on known bear denning areas and areas of proposed development. Aircraft , snowmobiles and snowshoes were used to track bears. Radio collars and color-coded markings were also used to assist in monitoring. Reactions to approaching aircraft were also recorded.

Results

The researchers found no evidence to support or disprove claims that grizzly bears were being affected by hydrocarbon explorations on Richards Island. Observed densities and populations at least indicate that grizzlies have not been decimated. However, individual bears are being affected by 1) slight loss of habitat due to avoidance of drilling and staging areas, 2) disturbance of bears during dormancy causing abandonment of dens, 3) relocation of problem bears frequenting camps. The grizzly population appears to have stabilized in relation to existing facilities, although no pre-impact data exists. The authors feel that the addition of proposed facilities and accompanying activities will undoubtedly have an impact on grizzlies in the area. Additional all-weather roads will also give hunters more access to the area, further threatening population numbers.
