On April 15, 1986, Wolf W8550 began denning activity 20 km south-southeast of the Canadian border in Glacier National Park, the first denning activity in the Western United States since their extripation . The den consisted of 5 den openings dug into a flat-topped, heavily forested knoll that rose 3 m above an adjacent 2 ha meadow. The meadow was believed to be used as a rendezvous site. Den openings were hidden in Engelmann spruce, Douglas-fir, and lodgepole pines.
