p. 40

Keep a sanitary yard. If your garbage is smelly or you have any food sources outside, the bears will come around for an easy meal- and once they’re in the yard, they’ll explore other food sources around the house. Keep garbage inside until it’s time to take it to the dump. Protect your gardens and orchards with an electric fence- and get a big, well-trained dog.

even living near a landfill or having sloppy neighbors is a cause for concern if it brings bears down around your dwelling…. To discourage bears from coming around your house, keep brush cut down so bears don’t have cover to get close. Four walls and a roof may not be enough to stop bears that have associated the home with food; bears have torn through walls, roofs, doors, and windows in search of food.

Don’t leave your children playing in the yard.
